Steel war brewing in South West Victoria
Unions and local turbine manufacturers are in uproar as a multinational wind farm developer has chosen (cheaper) imported steel to supply the construction of the 218MW Ryan Corner wind farm. Reporting assumes that the source will be Chinese steel mills (although not confirmed) and the local Portland manufacturer claims that this decision will lead to local job losses.
Both the Union and the Company point-out that if the contract was government sponsored, local content requirements would apply however the project is privately contracted.
