Does the construction industry need a royal commission?

The Age is reporting that the industry group Builders Collective of Australia has called for the government to launch a Royal Commission into the construction industry. The basis for this claim centres on the flammable cladding issue and the Opal tower structural failure. It has been 15 years since The Cole Royal Commission into the industry failed to find a smoking gun on systemic criminality in the sector but did ultimately result in the ABCC and Fair Work (building) act.

Does the industry need another Royal Commission? Probably not, but it does need a review of current regulations and procedures. Commission after Commission has proven that they are expensive, taxing, lengthy and may stir up a fuss but the dust settles quickly. Ultimately there are rules, regulations and procedures that already exist but are not being executed effectively. The industry has, is and must accept its liability and responsibility for mistakes made.
