BESIX Watpac to upgrade iconic Sydney ferry wharves
BESIX Watpac has been appointed Managing Contractor by Transport for New South Wales for the design and delivery of upgraded Ferry Wharves in iconic Sydney harbourside locations.
The contract has been awarded under the Ferry Wharf Upgrade Program (FWUP) Tranche 3 which will see the progressive upgrading or replacement of wharves and associated facilities on the Sydney Ferries Network as part of the NSW Government’s Transport Access Program (TAP).
BESIX Watpac’s contract commences with the design of the Taronga Zoo and South Mosman ferry wharves, and the construction of North Sydney wharf. Subject to funding, planning and performance, the program will be progressively expanded in coming years to include wharves at Greenwich Point, Darling Point, Double Bay, Watsons Bay, Manly (wharf 3) and Rhodes.
BESIX Watpac CEO Jean-Pol Bouharmont says the contract is an important new milestone in the company’s engineering-led, multidisciplinary offering.
“Transport infrastructure and marine infrastructure are priorities for BESIX Watpac and we are delighted to be providing both under this contract and to be delivering another tranche of important infrastructure for our key client, Transport for NSW,” Jean-Pol said.
General Manager New South Wales Peter Furlong says his team is excited about the project which joins Sydney Metro’s Barangaroo Station as highly visible harbourside projects being undertaken by BESIX Watpac for Transport for NSW.
“It’s an honour to be delivering facilities that provide accessible, secure, integrated and up-to-date transport infrastructure to public transport customers on some of the most picturesque ferry services in the world,” Peter said.
General Manager Marine and Civil, Bram Gruwez says the Ferry Wharf contract represents a significant expansion in BESIX Watpac’s marine footprint in Australia.
“We are delivering an important quay wharf for Defence in Far North Queensland and the iconic Kangaroo Point Green Bridge in Brisbane, and the Ferry Wharf Upgrade Program is a very important next step in our expansion into the marine infrastructure space,” Bram said.
BESIX Watpac is already underway with the design of Taronga Zoo and South Mosman wharves, with completion of the construction of North Sydney Ferry Wharf expected mid 2022
